A flood alert for South Ribble and Chorley was in place as householders woke up today after a night of heavy rain across the county.

The Environment Agency warned people in the catchments areas of the Lostock and Yarrow rivers to be on their guard, although no serious incidents had been reported by breakfast-time.

The areas affected were Leyland, Lostock Hall, Bamber Bridge, Croston, Coppull, Eccleston, Chorley and Whittle-le-Woods.

The alert was classified as: “Flooding is possible, be prepared.”

Fire crews were called out to The Common at Adlington at around 4.15am today to pump out water from three houses.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “There are lots of big puddles around, but so far no real problems with flooding across the county. But there is an alert in place for the Yarrow and Lostock.”
