A brave shopping centre security officer and her colleagues have proved they are a cut above the rest - after having their heads shaved to raise cash for two children’s charities.
Alison Goodreid was one of 20 people to take part in St George’s Shopping Centre’s One Great Shave, a day of head and beard shaves and leg, back and chest waxes.
The group joined in the charity stunt in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital and Derian House Children’s Hospice, as part of the One Great Day campaign taking place across the country throughout June.
Alison had her long hair plaited and chopped off and then her head was shaved on stage as crowds of shoppers cheered her on.
Centre management staff and retailers from the centre’s shops, including The Entertainer, Game, Millie’s Cookies, Cuppa Caffe, Keo and The Chinese Buffet all braved the shave for charity.
And some passers-by also jumped in on the action and had their heads shaved in return for a donation.
Students from Preston’s College barbering course carried out the head shaves alongside staff from Supercuts, and the waxing was done by Mask Brow Bar, both based in the centre.
Alison said: “I was quite nervous before I got up on stage but the support from the crowd around me spurred me on.
“It was great for everybody to come together and support the charities and for us to do something a little different to raise the money.
“So far everyone has been very complimentary about the new hair style, but I think it will take me a while to get used to it.”
General manager at St George’s Shopping Centre, Andrew Stringer, who also had his head shaved, said: “Our fundraising day for One Great Day was exactly that, great.
“The support we had from shoppers during the day was overwhelming and we hope to have raised a wonderful amount for our chosen charities, which both do so much incredible work.
“We’re still collecting and counting the donations made, but we’re hoping to have raised up to £2,000.
“Everybody who took part was very brave, but huge credit goes to Alison.
“She didn’t think twice before signing up to have her head shaved and had a smile on her face all the way through.
“We couldn’t have staged the event without the support of our retailers and also Preston’s College, who all helped to make the day a success. We’re grateful to everyone involved.”
