Lancashire petrol heads gear up for Euro charity challenge

A pair of self-proclaimed '˜petrol-heads' will be speeding across Europe's toughest terrains to raise money for charity.

Coach driver Campbell Logan, 23, and his friend Andrew Mitchell will be taking on the Czecheap Challenge from Blackpool to Prague in the Czech Republic in an ‘old banger’ on May 26.

The 10-day rally will take them across the roads of Belgium, Germany, Austria and Poland in a 15-year-old Vauxhall Vectra to raise money for children’s charity CLIC Sargent.

Campbell, of Lytham Road in Warton, said: “To say we’re excited would be an understatement. It’s going to be a bit of a wacky road trip. We’re all going to have a bit of a party and experience the European lifestyle over some of the best roads in the world.

“It’s a real fun event. You buy a car that’s all banged up and you do what you can with it. We’ve fixed the engine and replaced all the engine fluids, we’ve replaced the brakes all-round.

“We’ve done work to the electric system to make sure it’s all running correctly because they were blown when we first got it. We’ve had to take out all the interior because it was mouldy and give it a thoroughly good clean.”

Campbell and Andrew, also 23, hope to raise at least £1,000 for CLIC Sargent, which supports children and young people with cancer.

Campbell said: “I have always seen what the charity does as being really great.

“I used to live near a CLIC Sargent support centre. They would take children who were down and depressed and bring them and put a smile on their faces. For me, that’s one of the best things you can provide for a child.”

Business adviser Andrew, of Canberra Way in Warton, said: “I have always wanted to do something for charity and I’ve also always wanted to travel Europe, so why not mix the two together?

“I think with all the support we’ve had we should be able to overcome any difficulties on the way. I’m a bit nervous because I’ve never done something like this before.

“We’ve already raised £800 – we were only expecting £500.

“We’d like to get it all the way to £1,000 or even more. That would be incredible.”
