A spokesman for the fire service said: "We attended a fire outside the former B&Q store in Preston last night. The fire started outside in a sofa but had spread to the cladding of the building.

"We used hose-reel jets to extinguish the fire. Thankfully we managed to get there in time. If it had been left any longer the fire could have been much more serious. We believe the fire was started deliberately."

Nobody was injured during the incident.
