The latest public art gateway feature got the go ahead from South Ribble planning councillors last night and will be installed on grassland between Schleswig Way and Longmeanygate.

It forms part of the Leyland Masterplan, which has seen historic artefacts restored and gateway features installed at major routes into the town, including a Centurion Tank and Leyland tractor.

The horse sculpture - double the size of a living horse - is to be made out of recycled materials, the major component of which would be reclaimed horse shoes.

The horse shoes and recycled metal would have taken up a rusted brown patina, with small areas of the horse highlighted using paints.

At night it would be illuminated with low-wattage LEDs.

The horse would be pulling a traditional wooden cart filled with items which reflect local produce.

The council says: “It fits with the other features perfectly by linking the road back down towards Leyland Lane. You would see the Leyland Tractor 245 and following the road north to Flensburg Way you would see the Centurion Tank.

“The strategy lifts not only our local areas but the profile of Leyland and the borough to a much wider audience.”

The location was chosen due to the large volumes of traffic passing daily.
