Firefighters spent almost two hours trying to rescue a horse from a muddy pit after heavy rain left a farmer’s field like a quagmire.

The crew needed heavy lifting gear to free the animal from a hole at the rear of the Bell Aire Caravan Park in Middleton Road, Heysham.

One of the firefighters said: “It was as deep as I’ve ever seen a horse stuck. It took us a while, but we got it out eventually. The vet examined the horse and thankfully said it was OK after its ordeal.”
