Hospital chiefs have revealed their improvement plan after they were placed into special measures by the health watchdog.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust was given an “inadequate” rating by the Care Quality Commission in June.

The Trust, which runs the Royal Lancaster Hospital, said it has “redoubled” its efforts in a number of existing improvement projects, and started the ball rolling on new initiatives.

The Trust said its plan links directly to the areas highlighted by the CQC as in need of improvement action:

•Increasing and sustaining staffing levels

• Making performance information clearer and more in depth

• Improving nurse record keeping

• Raising frontline staff engagement through increased, effective communication

• Thorough incident reporting and keeping a record of lessons learnt

• Developing the availability of case notes and test results in our Outpatients Departments

Chief Executive Jackie Daniel said: “While we continue to make progress with improving the quality of services for patients and support for staff, we still have a great deal to do.

“To us, our CQC action plan is much more than just a tick-box list. It forms the first year of our three-year Quality Improvement Plan for the Trust – an integrated programme of work designed not just to bring us up to the standard of good, but make us an outstanding Trust that is future-proofed to deal with changing demands on the NHS.

“Every single member of staff has a part to play, and we are all working together to the same goals.”

The Trust has started to set up and Improvement Board to oversee the progress of the plan in a way that takes account of the different perspectives offered by different organisations involved in NHS care.

Organisations will include the Trust, Cumbria and Lancashire North Clinical Commissioning Groups, HealthWatch and the Health Overview and Scrutiny.

Updates on the progress of the plan will be made monthly. For information visit:
