A care home has made improvements ordered by the health watchdog, but is still not meeting staffing standards, inspector say.

The Evening Post reported in January that bosses at Longton Nursing and Residential Home in Longton near Preston, were told to take urgent action in two of five inspection areas.

The Care Quality Commission told the home in Marsh Lane, to improve staffing and how it monitors the quality of its service.

It met the standards in the other three areas which relate to respecting people at the home, the care and welfare of people at the home and meeting nutritional needs.

Now inspectors have published a follow up report following the most recent inspection.

It has made the necessary changes to meet standards in terms of monitoring the quality of service, but the watchdog has again raised concerns over staffing levels.

Inspectors said: “It was not always clear if there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people’s needs.

“At the last Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection concerns were noted around staffing levels and whether they had been appropriately assessed on people’s needs.

“An action plan was submitted stating a new care profile system was to be implemented to ensure staffing level was reflective of assessed need. The new care profile was still to be introduced.”

However the nursing home has improved the way it monitors its service.

In it’s latest report the inspectors said: “We completed this inspection to check the provider had met the needs of a warning notice issued in January 2014.

“Monitoring had now been implemented and through the clinical audit tool the information gathered had been collated to enable the provider to appropriately assess risks to people who lived in the home.

“This meant where information was available for the provider to analyse and manage the associated risks, the provider had begun to do so.

“This included better completion of accident and incident logs and the introduction of a falls log.

“Over the coming months this tool should enable the provider to identify any themes or trends from the logs and thus develop effective action plans to reduce any identified risks.”

MPS Investments, the owners of the home, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

The residential home provides accommodation for up to 58 people with personal or nursing care needs.
