A plucky Preston resident has installed a fake tombstone on Eastway, near the junction with Lightfoot Lane, lamenting the ‘death’ of Fulwood.

It reads ‘RIP Fulwood. Killed by concrete’.

In the area surrounding the sign, there are currently two housing developments under way – one with 125 homes near to Preston Grasshoppers, and another, called Fulwood Green just off Eastway, with 22 plots.

Behind the sign is a new estate recently completed off Lightfoot Lane. Outline Planning Application has also been granted for Redrow to build 330 houses with the potential to increase up to 1400 houses to the north of Lightfoot Lane.

It is not known who is responsible for the sign, but LLARA, the Lightfoot Lane Area Residents Association, has previously raised concerns about the impact of the area’s character and infrastructure.

However, Greyfriars councillor David Hammond said the sign is not representative of local views.

He said: “I’ve had very few complaints about the development going on.

“The people of Fulwood seem to have accepted the Preston plan, which this is all part of.

“Of course people want to live in the countryside, but they also understand the need to build new houses.

“I don’t think this sign represents what people generally think in the area and if it’s been done in a humorous way, you have to see the funny side.

“I’d be putting one up next to it stating ‘onwards and upwards’. We have to look forward.”

The view has been echoed by some people on social media.

Angela Fearns wrote: “We need homes, schools everything, where are they supposed to build?”

Other people said the local development “was not good” and others had mistaken it as the site of a fatal accident while driving passed.

Jo Jinelli Richardson said: “I saw something as I whizzed past. Thought someone had been killed there.”
