The renovation would see new changing rooms – which haven’t been updated for almost 40 years.

Wyre Council, in conjunction with Fylde Coast YMCA, has applied to Sport England for a grant – and if succesful Wyre Council will matched the £52,500 contribution.

Michael Harrison, senior marketing manager at the YMCA, says the revamp is “well overdue”.

He said: “The changing rooms really needed modernising.

“Some parts haven’t been changed since the 1970s.

“One of the main consequences we hope to get out of this is to get more people swimming, at all ages.”

Fylde Coast YMCA manage the facility on behalf of Wyre Council and the bid was submitted by the council supported by the YMCA.

The final proposals are yet to be submitted and Mr Harrison says he hopes to have the new and improved centres up and running by September.

A Wyre Council spokesman said: “We hope to refurbish the changing rooms at the pool and have applied to Sport England for funding to help with this.

“We’re also looking to improve the gym facilities but are in early stages of design and costings.

“We intend to carry out the work in summer, in order to have the least impact on customers and schools using the pool.

“The final proposals are yet to go to Wyre’s Cabinet for approval.”

Garstang mayor Lynn Harter says the renovation would be “well received” by the local community.

The council will find out in May whether the bid has been successful.
