Garstang youngsters get into the festival spirit

Children took a day out of the holidays to get into the festival spirit and bring to life some favourite characters from TV and film for the Garstang District Children’s Festival.

Garstang was packed out as thousands of families came together to watch the annual parade as it filtered through the High Street on its traditional tour around the town centre.

And getting her chance to shine was Festival Queen Alex Walmsley, 13, who kicked off proceedings following the honoury crowning ceremony.

Highlights from the children’s tableaux’s included the Great Garstang Bake Off, Shaun the Sheep and the Wizard of Oz.

Chairman Julie Bell said it was a labour of love for the generations of families, who have turned out year after year.

New Wyre Mayor and Coun for Garstang Tom Balmain said: “I’ve taken part of the parade for many years but this time was just a different collar and it was privilege to be involved as the First Citizen of Wyre. It was a little chilly but kept dry and the children had a good day.”

Garstang Mayor Lynn Harter added: “It went brilliantly and I have congratulated the committee yet again on a wonderful day.

“It always runs seamlessly and the children looked beautiful.

Garstang School of Gymnastics opened the afternoon’s entertainment on the Moss Lane Playing Fields, followed by the children’s sport events and football tournament.
