The villages of Great Eccleston, Little Eccleston and Elswick have lost their gas supply after a main was damaged.
National Grid said engineers are working on the problem - but it could be off until Monday.
National Grid spokesman Jane Taylor said: “A medium pressure gas main has been damaged by contractors who were working on the road, leaving the villages of Great Eccleston, Little Eccleston and Elswick without gas.
“Engineers are heading to the area tonight to begin work but we expect work to continue over the weekend.
“There is no gas leak and no danger.
“We will be calling on all the approximately 1,000 households affected to check their gas connections.
“We are also handing out fan heaters to people who have no other form of heating.”
