Preston Council has accepted outside funding to upgrade a BMX facility in Fishwick.

The site on Fishwick Recreation Ground will be transformed into a national standard facility, following several grants.

Council cabinet members agreed to approve £37,593 from Sport England Inspired Facilities Fund, £25,220 from Barclay’s Space for Sport, and £8,010 from Preston Pirates.

The armed forces have also offered £4,363 in-kind plant and labour support for the project.

The improvements to the track will include track remodelling to increase its length to meet National standards, drainage works & floodlighting, to enable increased year round usage.

Work will be undertaken throughout the coming year.

Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for environment, said: “It’s an excellent scheme.

“I hope that it will keep people from riding mini motos in the streets.

“We are proud to have it, and when the BMX riders grow up, they might also start to use the Guild Wheel.”
