Free kitchen gives Preston a taste of goodwill

Preston Sikh Society planned the event for Sunday, with the aim of “making a stronger community by fighting hunger together”.

Organisers say about 30 volunteers turned out to the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen, with about 75 people being served meals.

Co-ordinator Gurumukh Singh said: “It was fantastic, it was our first experience and we couldn’t have asked for anything better.” He said the kitchen was open to everybody but was largely aimed at the homeless community, and said: “We would like to help them as much as we can from now on.”

The kitchen, held at the covered market, has initially been set up on a monthly basis, and is soon hoped to be held fortnightly.

Mr Singh said: “About 30 volunteers came from Lancaster, Preston, even a group from Doncaster gave their support, it was a joint effort.”
