A Preston housing association is one of three organisations to receive grants from Lancashire County Council to help people who cannot afford to eat.

Community Gateway was presented with a £10,000 food poverty grant to distribute to the most needy across the city.

The authority’s chairman, Coun Kevin Ellard, handed over the cash, as well as giving £5,000 to the St Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Fleetwood and £2,060 to the Fylde Food Bank in St Annes.

“These groups are a lifeline to many people who can’t afford to eat healthily,” said Coun Ellard. “Their services are very well used, but like many organisations, they struggle at a time when money is tight. When people struggle to eat, there will be serious consequences for their health, which is why we need to do all we can to help these organisations keep going.

“While visiting the groups I’ve been very impressed with the tremendous job they do and the dedication and commitment shown by people who run them. I hope this funding means they can carry on providing their vital services for years to come.”
