Firefighters remain at scene of wood mill fire

Three fire crews are still at the scene of a huge wood mill fire in Farington Moss.

Officers from Skelmersdale, Bamber Bridge and St Anne’s are damping down and making sure buildings are safe at Whitfire Shavings Ltd in Church Lane, after a blaze began yesterday morning.

At the height of the fire, 80 firefighters and an aerial ladder were needed to stop flames spreading further.

Roads were closed, local residents advised to stay indoors with windows shut, and a plume of smoke could be seen for miles.

Investigation work into the cause of the fire began yesterday and is expected to take weeks to complete.
