The fire, in Carr Lane, broke out just after 3am today and caused a large plume of smoke over the village.

Five fire engines from Tarleton, Chorley, Leyland, Bamber Bridge and Penwortham were called to the incident and crews managed to drag the hay into a field so it could burn itself out.

The barn, which was well alight when the firefighters arrived, was badly damaged and people were being urged to keep away from the scene.

“The fire involves 200 tonnes of hay,” said a fire brigade spokesman.

“We are asking people to please keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke plume that has generated and avoid the area if possible.

“Firefighters moved the hay to a nearby field and took the decision to let it burn under firefighter supervision.”
