A fire crew from Penwortham fire station were called to help a cow from a ditch.

The animal, that had found itself stuck in a water-filled trench on Saturday evening, was assisted by firefighters off Old School Lane at around 5.30pm.

A spokesman from Penwortham Fire Station said: “It was bogged down in the ditch and had just exhausted itself from trying to get out so we helped it along.

“It was reasonably small so we hoiked it out.

“It lay on the verge for a while so we tried to encourage it up with some water and fresh grass.”
