Eric Morecambe art show to open on 90th anniversary of comic's birth

An art exhibition paying tribute to the life of Eric Morecambe is coming to town.

Artists are wanted for ‘The Art Show Wot We Done’ at Morecambe Library, set to open on what would have been the comedian’s 90th birthday.

Organisers want artists to produce work with an Eric theme and the best will be exhibited in the library from May 14 until July 9.

Run by the Morecambe Artist Colony, the art display will be held to coincide with an Eric Morecambe exhibition at the City Museum in Lancaster.

This will include Morecambe and Wise memorabilia and is backed by Eric’s family.

The Lancaster exhibition will run from May 14 until July 10 and will celebrate 75 years since Morecambe and Wise first performed together.

The deadline for submissions for ‘The Art Show Wot We Done’ is April 5. More than 150 artists have been contacted and asked to contribute but any artist can apply. The artforms will include fine art in the form of 2D and 3D photography and digital media.

There will also be a community element comprising of a display of ‘selfies’ taken by members of the public at the Eric Morecambe Statue on Morecambe Promenade.

“We want this to be recognised as an important national event,” said Sian Johnson from Morecambe Artist Colony.

“The artwork has to be inspired by Eric.”
