PROJECT UPDATE: Foul stench at Clayton Hall Landfill Site
Has the smelly tip in Whittle-le-Woods now been covered? It has. Both the Environment Agency, which regulates Clayton Hall Landfill Site and Quercia, the operators, have confirmed this.
Is Quercia now also extracting gas from the waste?Yes. The firm has said that machinery is now also in place to extract gas from the landfill.

Hide AdHas the terrible smell gone?Mostly but not totally. The EA has seen a drop in complaints from residents affected in Buckshaw Village and the Whittle and Clayton-le-Woods areas. In an update the Government arm published a report which states: “The hydrogen sulphide monitoring is showing a decrease in levels. The odour is still noticeable but is not as strong or lasting as long as it previously was.”
Will the tip be allowed to accept waste again?Only when it produces a waste management plan which must be passed by officers at the EA.
What now? The EA is continuing to spot monitor for hydrogen sulphide levels until the end of April and yesterday (Friday) saw another drop in session at the Hallmark Hotel in Leyland.
