Leaving home for university for the first time can be daunting but, in a bid to make the move easier University of Cumbria Student Union’s officers Hannah Price and Anna Fletcher feature in a series of short videos that are being shared on social media throughout clearing week.

Entilted, Hannah and Anna’s guides, the aim is to explain more about what life is like at the Lancaster-based university, especially during the first few days and weeks.

Persevere, don’t panic and make sure you join a society,” is the key message from Hannah, while Anna says new arrivals should get involved and not be afraid to ask for help.

Anna, who originates from Derby, says: “ I’d looked at other places but when I came here it was like a family.

I felt so at ease, so relaxed and when I left my interview I said ‘that’s where I want to go’ – they’re amazing and I never looked back.”

The proximity of the Lake District recently designated a World Heritage Site – with one University of Cumbria campus based within it – was another draw for the pair who hope to pass on their experience to potential students.

Hannah and Anna’s guides are being shared on social media this week and can be found on the university’s YouTube channel.

They discuss, good and tough times, finance and their top tips.

The university’s clearing hotline, 0808 178 7373 is free from landlines and mobiles. Expert call handlers will be on hand to offer guidance on the availability of courses, eligibility, interviews, course details and other support services.

Gill Haigh, director of marketing and recruitment, said: “Our clearing tips come direct from students and graduates who’ve been through it and they show just how simple it can be. Our role is to offer personalised support to help you get the right information you need and help you make an informed choice that sets you up for a successful future.”

The call centre will be open from 6.30am-8pm on Thursday 17 August, 8am-6pm on Friday 18 August, 9.00am-5.00pm on Saturday 19 and then 10am – 4pm on Sunday 20 August. Normal office hours resume on Monday 21 August (9am – 5pm).

Open days will be held across the campuses on Saturday. If applicants are unable to make this date, the university has a range of campus tours available in the weeks following clearing which can be booked via the website.
