Three Marketing students from The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have been crowned the winners of the annual Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) national Pitch competition.

UCLan’s Innov8 team; Nicola Eagleton, Heather Taylor and Jessica Dodson presented their five-minute pitch in the final of competition alongside teams from Newcastle University, the University of Birmingham and Bangor University.

The pitches were presented to an audience of 250 people at the conference in London and judged by representatives from BPFI Cartons, The CIM and Mintel. The winning team was decided through 50 per cent of judges’ vote and 50 per cent of the audience vote for the best overall pitch.

This year’s brief for the competition was to develop social media campaigns for the carton industry.

Team member Heather Taylor said: “Our campaign aimed to increase usage of board in the packaging industry as well as to educate and create positive connotations of carton and boxboard with the consumer.

“Our strategy involved creating Twinings Tea pop-up cafés in the major UK cities, where everything inside and outside would be made from carton material. The environment would be surrounded by different QR and NFC codes allowing customers to share their experience online with their friends.”

Nicola Eagleton said: “It was an amazing experience and a brilliant day. The work that we put in definitely paid off. We got lots of positive feedback on our pitch from the judges and the audience. One of the most uplifting moments was when the Waitrose Marketing Director came up to congratulate us on winning the competition.”
