Residents worried about the impact of floodlit sports pitches are holding a public meeting.

People living near Fulwood Academy in Black Bull Lane, Preston, have been lobbying Preston Council over the plans submitted last year, which would see 45ft (15m) tall lighting pylons around the all-weather pitch at the school.

So far nearly 140 letters of objection have been sent to the council about the new lighting scheme, which is due to be discussed by the city council’s planning committee next month.

Residents claim they are already suffering noise nuisance caused by increased use of the school pitches and are worried the latest proposals will extend usage.

Greyfriars Coun Damien Moore, who has been supportive of the residents’ concerns, said: “We have a situation where a school with a sporting facility is becoming a sporting facility with a school.”

The residents’ group is holding a meeting at Preston Grasshoppers Club in Lightfoot Lane on Tuesday at 8 pm.
