A woman has pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge of a child.

Claire Millar, of Elton Street, Ashton, was found drunk on Blackpool Promenade at night with a six-year-old boy who was shivering with cold.

Magistrates in the resort heard that she was unsteady on her feet and crying and the small boy was dressed only in swimming trunks with a towel draped over him when police discovered the pair.

The 25-year-old, who has a previous conviction for being drunk in charge of her son in 2010, was sentenced to nine months supervision and ordered to pay £60 costs plus £60 victims’ surcharge by District Judge Alan Jones.

Prosecutor, Ms Alison Quanbrough, said on July 28 at 8.20pm police received a tip-off a drunken woman was outside the Albert and Lion pub on the resort’s Promenade. An officer found Millar sitting on an ornamental concrete ball.

She was crying and her eyes were glazed. It was the officer’s opinion she was very drunk.

A shivering child was with her, dressed only in swimming trunks with a towel draped round him.

Social services is now involved in the case.

Mr Scott Parker, defending, said Millar visited the resort around the day of the boy’s birthday and taken him to Blackpool Tower.

There was a bar and Millar had more drinks than she should have, the court heard.
