The pensioner is demanding an explanation from the managers of the King George V playing fields in Higher Walton near Preston because her three-year-old Airdale Terrier needed treatment costing more than £60 after getting tangled up during a walk.

“I’m furious that rolls of barbed wire could be left out in the open – it’s dangerous,” said Margaret, 75, of Cranbourne Street, Bamber Bridge.

“It’s bad enough that Bella got hurt. But it could have been a child, because youngsters go on there and there’s a play area at the bottom.

“I’m not demanding compensation because I’m not the sort to put a claim in. I suppose I’ll have to foot the bill myself, even though I’m a pensioner.

“But it would be good to hear from the owners of the land why rolls of sharp barbed wire were left lying in the open where they can cause injury.”

Margaret claims Bella was badly cut when she took her three dogs for their daily constitutional on the open land off Higher Walton Road.

Bodgey, a 13-year-old Airdale and Welsh Terrier Polly, 15, escaped unhurt.

But Bella needed a visit to the vet’s to repair damage to one of her back legs.

“There has been some work going on up there and I can only assume the barbed wire was left by contractors,” said Margaret. “If that had been a child who suffered a gash there would have been be a public outcry. I don’t want anyone, or any other animal, to get hurt. It needs clearing up.”

The playing fields were previously owned by a charity and are now managed by South Ribble Council. A spokesperson was unavailable.
