Dog gets trapped in embankment near Samlesbury

Fire crews from Preston were called out to rescue the Patterdale Terrier, called Ollie, after he became trapped near Goosefoot Close on Sunday evening.

His owners were unable to help the fearless pooch after he scampered into a small tunnel in the mud while chasing a rodent.

The distressed owners spent several hours trying to find a way extract the dog before calling for help.

Crew Manager for Preston Fire Station, Chris Wales said: "We sent one engine to rescue the dog which had been stuck for some time.

"It seems the dog had been chasing a rat into the banking and did not come out.

"It had been in a good few hours. The owners were hoping it would come out on its own, but it was close to the river and they were worried about the water level rising.

"We were called out to help and used spades to manually dig the dog out.

"The dog was a bit shaken up and we all got a bit muddy, but thankfully everyone, including the dog was fine.

"The owners and the dog looked very happy to be reunited."
