New figures from the StepChange Debt Charity show that the average unsecured debt level of people in Lancaster contacting its helpline was on course to rise for 2012.

The charity is now warning consumers over the dangers of debt consolidation, and recommending the benefits of debt management. In the first nine months of 2012, the average StepChange Debt Charity client in Lancaster owed £18,402. In 2011 the average amount owed was £17,801.

The rise in the average debt levels of Lancaster stands in contrast to the national trend of falling debt levels.
