Dairy scoops top award for its fine crumbly cheese

Greenfields Dairy’s Crumbly Lancashire beat more than 4,600 cheeses to be crowned the supreme champion cheese at the prestigious the International Cheese Awards at Nantwich Show last week.

The haul of silverware has arrived back in Goosnargh after the dairy’s Crumbly Lancashire was crowned the Supreme Champion, winning the ‘National Westminster Cup’, as well as winning the ‘Best UK Cheese’, ‘The Haughmond Trophy’ champion farmhouse/traditional hard pressed territiorial cheese, ‘The Farmhouse Cheesemakers Trophy – Lancashire’, and the ‘Ted Hassall Memorial Trophy’ for the champion farmhouse/traditional cheese - five trophies in all!

Greenfields is a small, family run, traditional cheesemaking business, based in Syke House Lane, and has been exhibiting cheese at Nantwich for more than 40 years.

Managing director Steven Procter said: “We have won many other first prizes and trophies in previous years but this is the first time we have ever won the Supreme Championship.

“The cheese show entries seem to increase year on year and this year there were 4611 entries from 31 countries worldwide, so we are obviously very proud of our achievement.”

Although the dairy’s history lies in traditional recipes and hand crafting, Steven says they have invested heavily in state of the art packaging machinery and modern production equipment enabling them to produce a wide range of territorial and speciality cheeses.

All are produced from locally sourced milk, currently making 19 different varieties which can all be supplied in various different shapes and sizes ranging from a 20Kg traditional cloth bound and waxed cheese down to a 200g pre-pack.
