Firearms police rescued a woman who fell 40 foot into the River Ribble in Preston in the early hours of this morning.
Lancashire's armed response unit also had to rescue the woman's friend who had gone to her aid.
The women were treated for hypothermia at scene of the incident which happened at about 4am.
A spokesman for Lancashire Police ARV said: "Armed officers were on routine patrol when they were alerted to two females in the river.
"A throw line carried on our armed response vehicles was used to rescue the two females and they were treated by our staff who have advanced trauma management skills and equipment."
