A large spate of airbags were stolen from vehicles in the Penwortham area on Thursday evening.

Police said areas targeted were around the Newlands Avenue, Manor Avenue, Townlea Close, Moor Avenue and Howick Park Drive area of Higher Penwortham.

A spokesman said: “A number of these vehicles had been left insecure resulting in their contents being stolen.

“Please can we remind all residents to remove any valuables from their vehicles and to ensure that your vehicle is locked and secure at all times.

“If you have any information regarding these incidents then we would urge you to report this on 101 – Non emergency or via crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Airbag theft is a rising problem across the country, with each unit costing up to £1,000 to replace, and most cars having multiple air bags.

Thefts can result in severe damage to a car.
