A man has been charged with assaulting Chesterfield defender Ian Evatt at Deepdale yesterday.

The ex-Blackpool player claimed he had been kicked, punched and spat at by Preston North End fans during a pitch invasion after PNE’s 4-0 aggregate play-off semi-final victory over the Spireites.

Now Lancashire police confirmed that Matthew Edwards, 20, of Southern Avenue, Preston has been charged with Section 39 assault (battery) and is due to appear at Preston Magistrates Court on Thursday 28 May 2015.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said: “Officers are working alongside Preston North End in their investigation into the alleged assault on Chesterfield player Ian Evatt, which followed an otherwise largely peaceful pitch incursion at the end of the Preston vs Chesterfield match at Deepdale on Sunday.

“The player was thankfully not seriously hurt.”

Officers say the investigation is still live and they are continuing to try and identify anyone involved in the alleged assault.

They have issued a “thank you” to those who have provided information so far and appealed for anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact police on the non-emergency 101 quoting log number 0835 of May 10th.
