UPDATE: Attempted machete attack near university

A man has been detained after trying to attack another man with a machete.

Police were called at around 8am today following the incident in Ruff Lane, Ormskirk.

A 44-year-old man from Ormskirk was detained by police under the Mental Health Act and is currently in a secure unit.

No injuries were reported and police enquiries are continuing.

Earlier in the morning, students and staff at nearby Edge Hill University were asked to stay away from Ruff Woods because of the ongoing incident.

Ruff Lane was blocked by police half way between Mill Street and the back entrance to Ormskirk Hospital.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed they attended a private address in the local area at 8.49am, but nobody was taken to hospital.

A fire crew were also dispatched to the scene after being called by the police and dealt with what has been described as a “small, secondary fire”, at a property.
