Sergeant Harrison of Chorley Police instructed his officers to visit the home of one young suspect, a 14-year-old boy, after a firework was lit and shoved through a letter box in Duke Street on Saturday (October 31).

Police said they are treating the Halloween night 'prank' as a serious offence after it endangered a two-year-old who had been at home at the time.

The child was not injured by the firework, which exploded just a few feet from where she had been playing.

The 14-year-old suspect was identified by officers who visited the boy's home and arrested him in front of his family.

Following the Duke Street incident, a family member of the suspect, who was mortified by the younster's actions, has attended the targeted home with an apology card and a gift for the frightened toddler.

Another boy, aged 15, has also been arrested at the weekend for the same offence, after a lit firework was wedged through a letter box of a home in Tanyard Close, Coppull on October 16.

The firework was set off and the force of the explosion blew the letter box off the door, sending it hurling across the street.

The teenager was arrested on Saturday evening (October 31) after PCSOs trawled through local CCTV in order to identify him. He has since been released and placed on strict bail conditions.

Sergeant Harrison has made an example of the youngsters responsible for the dangerous pranks by arresting both boys, and has warned Chorley's youths that "this behaviour won't be tolerated".

He said: "The negatives from the weekend are obvious. The firework incident on Duke street was one negative where a firework was posted through a letter box where there was a two year old child on the other side.

"This is behaviour we just won't tolerate. Not only could the residents have been seriously harmed, but so could the culprits.

"As a result, this weekend a 14-year-old male was arrested for the Duke Street incident and a 15-year-old male has been arrested for the Tanyard Close incident and placed on strict bail conditions."
