Residents living near Walton-le-Dale’s Capitol Centre say ‘car cruises’ are ruining their evenings - but organisers insist meets are helping keep roads safer.
Dozens of car enthusiasts from Preston Car Cruise regularly gather at 8pm on Sundays to display their vehicles on the centre’s car park.
Although organisers issue codes of conduct, five complaints about noise were received by police last week. Videos on the group’s Facebook site show exhausts being revved for over two minutes.
One resident of London Road said: “My child can’t get to sleep with the loud exhausts and I can’t take them to McDonalds for a night meal because of all these anti-social hooligans are drifting all over the place.”
Organisers deny the accusations. Liam Passmore said: “We make sure that there are no burn outs, drifting and other things going on, and we always make that clear to the people who attend. As soon as there is someone messing about we personally tell them to stop because it doesn’t look good for us when the police come.”
He added: “Our meets are safe and we invite all kinds of people. We get a lot of families coming to our meets and give us very good feedback.”
He claims that police attend meets and have not mentioned any complaints to organisers.
Alex Bibby, said: “We make sure it is all safe and sound for the environment and public as well as nearby residents and we are keeping a good bunch or people of the roads at that time.”
PC Joan Calderbank said: “As a result of these complaints we have identified the area as a hotspot and will receive extra attention at the weekends. We are also working closely with the security staff at the centre and the council environmental health at South Ribble Borough Council.”
