Heartbroken staff say the charity bookshop in Cheapside, opposite Flag Market, has been broken into overnight, with thieves leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The shop's till float has been taken, but no other valuables were stolen, say staff.

The intruders have ransacked the shop and its back office, turning over boxes and shelves and emptying their contents onto the floor.

Management said they have no option but to keep the shop closed today whilst staff and volunteers clean-up.

Oxfam say its the second time the bookshop has been targeted, and the latest break-in has prompted it to invest in further security equipment.

This morning, the shop tweeted: "Sorry, we won’t be open this morning (Wednesday, September 16) as we have been burgled AGAIN.

"They only took our till float, but it’s more annoying that they have trashed the place.

"We will be investing in more security to ensure that it can’t happen again."
