Preston Fire Station received the call around 12.10am of what was originally described as a building fire in Heywood Road.

The station sent two fire engines to the blaze - which turned out to be in wheelie bins and discarded rubbish.

A spokesman said: "We sent two fire engines there to extinguish the fire but only ended up needing a hose reel."

Firefighters were on the scene for around 25 minutes.

Investigations are ongoing.
