The search led officers to the northbound M6 between junctions 31 and 31a where traffic was stopped.

A police spokesman said in a post to Twitter: "Unfortunately it looks like the offenders crossed the motorway and got away prior to police arrival.

"Preston police do however have their vehicle which they left at scene so that will be off to CSI for them to work their magic."
