Motorist caught driving at speeds of up to nearly 100ph through 50mph roadworks on M55

A motorist who was caught reaching speeds of up to nearly 100 miles on the M55 said it was because they were "travelling home after a night shift."

A VW Golf was followed by police after it was spotted travelling at 80mph through 50mph roadworks on the M55 this morning (May 21).

As police pursued the vehicle, the driver reached speeds of up to 98mph as they left the roadworks.

The drivers excuse was that they were "driving home after a night shift" when they were pulled over by police.

They have now been reported for a speeding offence.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "The Tactical Operations Team stopped this VW Golf after following it through the M55 roadworks at 80mph and proceeded to 98mph after they finished.

"Driver reported for speeding offence.

"Their excuse? Travelling home after a night shift."

Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit are in place along a short stretch of the M55 where a new junction (junction 2) is being constructed as part of Lancashire County Council’s Preston Western Distributor road project.

The speed limit is enforced to to ensure motorists who drive through them, and road workers, are safe.

The incident follows an accident on the M55 which occurred the day before (May 20).

A white Renault Megane landed on its roof after veering off the M55 in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Images from the scene show the front of the car was completely crushed and mangled as a result of the crash.

The driver managed to escape the incident with minor injuries, according to police.
