Man who had airgun and knives in street faces sentence

An alarming array of weapons were seized from a man when police stopped him in the street, thanks to a member of public who came forward with concerns.

Preston Crown Court heard Chavez Johnson, 20, of St George’s Road, Preston, was found with a hunting knife, loaded air pistol and lock knife on him when he was searched by officers probing a report of someone being threatened in the street with a knife in Preston.

It is understood a worried passer by contacted police on March 2 reporting an unknown person had been threatened with a weapon - and said the man with the knife was regularly seen on Frank Street, an industrial area.

The following day, officers probing the incident, spotted Johnson on Frank Street and stopped him to investigate.

He admitted three counts of possessing a weapon.

Recorder Mark Ainsworth adjourned his sentencing until July 4.

Det Insp Jane Webb, of Preston CID, said: “The dangers of carrying weapons are well documented.

“This case shows how even the smallest piece of intelligence from the public can make all the difference and thankfully, these weapons have now been taken off Preston’s streets.”
