The attack happened between 9.45pm and 10.20pm on Sunday, May 6 when the 62-year-old man is reported to have witnessed the woman being verbally abused by four men in a red car on St Mary’s Street North.

Police say the man intervened and was then assaulted by one of the men in the car. Shortly after the man lost consciousness and broke his arm having fallen to the ground on Ribbleton Lane close to Deepdale Mill Street.

Detectives are now appealing for information following the incident and are keen to speak to any witnesses, including the woman being abused by the men.

Det Con Kurt Edwards, of Preston CID, said: “An investigation is underway after a serious assault in Preston.

“The offender and the men with him are all believed to have been speaking with Eastern European accents.

“The woman they were shouting at is described as a white female, well-tanned, with long, dark, straight hair. We are keen to trace her as part of our enquiries as well as anyone else who saw the attack or who was in the area at the time of the offence.

“If you know the men involved, or, if you were the woman at the scene, we want to speak to you. Any information could prove crucial.”
