CCTV images have been released after a man was slashed across the face in an attack in Preston.

Police said the victim, aged 27, and a group of his friends were walking along Friargate at about 1am on Sunday, when they were verbally abused by another group.

The offender then lunged at the victim with a ‘sharp implement’, possibly a knife, and slashed him across the face causing a nasty facial wound.

He left the scene with a woman, waking towards Church Street, and police have issued CCTV images in a bid to trace the man and woman.

The attacker is described as white, in his 20s, with very dark short hair and of slim build.

He was wearing a dark tracksuit with a large Nike motif on the left side of the chest and a white stripe on the sleeves, and a t-shirt with a multi-coloured pattern on it.

DC Rachael Ashcroft said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked assault which has left the victim with a serious injury and very badly shaken and he was lucky not to have been even more seriously hurt. There were a number of people on Friargate when this incident occurred due to the Halloween celebrations and the football. We would like anyone who saw the incident to assist us with our enquiries.”
