A woman broke down as she told a court she was groomed and indecently assaulted by a well-known member of the farming community as she entered her teenage years.

Robert Hayes-Danson, 46, known locally as Bob Danson, denies 11 counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecency with a child at Preston Crown Court.

The woman sobbed as she told the court she believed she was having a secret affair with Danson, although she was aged between 12 and 14 years old when the alleged abuse took place.

When Danson, now a married father-of-two, had a breakdown in 1993, the woman said she blamed herself for his illness: “(The abuse) was going on before that and I was petrified because I thought I had caused it.

“I was worried in case anyone found out.”

The woman, who cannot be identified, told the court Danson, formerly of Woodplumpton, began touching her and kissing her shortly after she started high school.

She said: “I just let him do it, so he probably just kept doing more and more, just to see what my reaction would be.

“He used to say that he loved me and he was going to leave his wife.

“He bought me some perfume.”

The court heard when the girl reached 14 years old, she had sex with Danson. Richard Howarth, prosecuting, explained to the jury Danson was charged with indecent assault in relation to that incident as the youngster had consented to sex with him, and could therefore not be charged as rape.

The woman is one of three women to make complaints, dating back as far as 1985 against Hayes-Danson, now of Birch Avenue, Newton-with-Scales.
