Man charged with robbery and shoplifting after alleged month-long spree at Co-Op in Adlington

A man has been charged with robbery and shoplifting after allegedly targeting a Co-Op store in Adlington for more than a month.

David Bird, 43, from Bolton, has been remanded to prison after being charged with robbery and seven counts of shoplifting.

He is suspected of a spate of crimes at the Co-Op in Bolton Road that occurred between January and February.

Bird was arrested on Monday (February 3) by officers with Chorley neighbourhood police.

He appeared before Preston Magistrates' Court at 10am yesterday (Tuesday, February 4) where he was remanded to prison.

He has also been charged with driving whilst disqualified.

A spokesman for Chorley Police said: "Bird is suspected of a spate of crimes at the Co-Op, Bolton Road, Adlington spanning over the last month, but officers finally caught up with him on Monday.

"Chorley Neighbourhood police have worked with the Co-Op store to bring him into custody after he had allegedly been stealing goods from the store and making threats of violence in the process.

"This evening (Monday, February 3), PC Patel has been entering the store and come across the offender also entering the store most likely to commit another crime.

"PC Patel has bravely arrested the man despite his attempt to deceive him and he has been met by a round of applause by the staff."

A spokesman for the Co-Op store in Adlington has thanked local police officers for their response to reports of 'relentless shoplifting' at the store.

A spokesman said: "The Co-op management and staff at Adlington, Bolton Road are extremely grateful for all your hard work and support in arresting this person and would like to thank you all for your continued support with ongoing crime."
