Thieves have stripped thousands of pounds of lead from the roof of a picturesque rural church.

The vandals targeted St Michael’s Church, on Blackpool Road in St Michael’s near Garstang, over the weekend and are believed to have used a van to carry away the large amount of metal.

The lead, worth thousands of pounds, was cut away from the roof, causing damage to its structure.

Bosses at the parish have said the cost of replacing the lead and repairing the roof will cost more than £15,000.

PC Matt Butcher, from Garstang and Over Wyre Police, asked people living near churches to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to police.

PC Butcher said: “The damage and theft has resulted in excess of £15,000 of repairs and massive inconvenience to the parish.

“We believe that a van or similar sized vehicle may have been involved because of the amount of lead stolen.

“For anyone that lives near a church or other premise laden with lead please be vigilant and report anything suspicious.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference WB1501792 or log number LC-20150308-0503. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The church’s vicar, Rev Andrew Wilkinson, declined to comment on the matter.
