And by December, the Lancashire Police team hope to have the trainee German Shepherd fully licensed and working as part of the force.

Lancashire Police dog sergeant Chris Hutchinson is looking after little 9-week old pooch Hulk at home with his family.

He said: "He has come from the Greater Manchester police puppy programme, so his mum and dad are both police dogs so the chances are, he will make a very good police dog too.

"From what we have seen so far, he is fantastic and has been living with me, my two boys and my daughter at home.

"We came up with the name Hulk because GMP asked that the litter all had first names beginning with H. My six-year-old son Reggie asked if we could call him Hulk which is a very good name.

"His training has just started so we are doing little bits for food, ball play, ragging the toys around and using his nose - then we build it up from there."

Although he may not look like the well-built super hero just yet, Chris said that in 12 months time, the puppy will look like a Hulk when patrolling the streets of Lancashire.

The Police Dog Unit at Lancashire Police provides support to general policing throughout the county by offering specialist knowledge, abilities and skills when required, and currently consists of 18 operational handlers.

All of them are general purpose police dogs, of which three are specially trained as tactical firearms support dogs.

10 of the team are drugs, weapons and cash recovery dogs, three are explosives search dogs and two are victim recovery dogs.

And additional to this, five of the current handlers are also dangerous dog liaison officers helping to support the county.
