A thief who stole eight bottles of whiskey and two bottles of Grey Goose vodka from shops across Leyland and South Ribble has been jailed for 28 days.

Russell John Smith, 43, of Rothwell Crescent, Ribbleton, pleaded guilty to five counts of theft relating to five separate incidents at a hearing at Chorley Magistrates Court.

He also admitted criminal damage after vandalising a cell at Leyland police station while he was in custody.

Magistrates ruled the offence was aggravated as Smith was serving a community sentence at the time he committed the offences and added only a jail term was suitable.
