POLICE are still trying to positively identify a young woman killed in a suspected hit-and-run collision on the outskirts of Preston.
It is believed the victim was a 20-year-old overseas student at the University of Central Lancashire. But efforts to contact relatives in eastern Europe are understood to have delayed formal identification.
This is a tragic incident where a young woman has sadly passed away after what appears to be some kind of collision
The woman was found lying in the carriageway on Preston New Road, Clifton at around 10.50pm on Tuesday. She was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Road policing officer Sgt Sean Cunningham said: “This is a tragic incident where a young woman has sadly passed away after what appears to be some kind of collision.
“We are still trying to determine exactly what has happened and how the woman has come to be injured.
“At this moment, the woman’s identity is still to be found and so we are asking anyone who may recognise her description to come forward.”
Officers said a 26-year-old man from St Annes was arrested yesterday on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
The man was released later in the day after being bailed until May.
The collision happened on an unlit stretch of the A584 dual carriageway near to the Clifton Business Park. It is believed the victim was found lying in the road by a passing motorist who raised the alarm.
Police have appealed for anyone who can help solve the mystery to contact them on 101.
The woman was described as white, aged between 16 and 22-years-old. She was approximately 5ft 10ins, of slim build with long dark hair down to the middle of her back. Her hair appeared to have feathers woven into it.
