A banned motorist took a woman’s car and went off on a drunken joyride to Preston with her pet dog in the vehicle.

John Dyson, 50, who was three times over the limit when caught, pounced when the car was left unattended with the keys in the ignition.

He was seen driving on the M6, went to a pub in Penwortham, collided with a lampost at Preston and was eventually stopped in Warton.

Dyson, of Whinfield Avenue, Fleetwood, pleaded guilty to the aggravated taking of a vehicle and driving with excess alcohol, while disqualified and without insurance. He was jailed for 24 weeks suspended for two years, with a two-year community order, a 12-week overnight curfew and banned from driving for three years by Blackpool magistrates.

Dyson told police he had been drinking wine since 8am that day and did not even remember crashing the car.
