Officers say a gang arrived at the bank in a silver or grey-coloured BMW 5 Series and two of them, both wearing balaclavas and carrying a large rock and a crowbar, forced their way in.

They threatened staff and demanded they open an ATM cash machine, but fled empty-handed when the staff were unable to open it.

A blue BMW 3 Series car was waiting nearby. A third man set this car on fire and all three then got away in the silver car which was also set alight in nearby Fermor Road. The raiders then escaped in a third vehicle. None of the staff were hurt. Police say they have CCTV footage from inside the bank and from the vicinity of the premises.

DI Marc Nasser said: “This incident must have been incredibly frightening for the staff who were in the bank at the time. However, we would like to reassure the community that incidents like this are rare. We would now appeal to anybody who can help with our enquiries to get in touch on 101.”
