The cyclist, a man in his 50s, died despite the efforts of members of the public.

Police are now appealing for information to piece together why the man left the road.

Sgt Steve Hardman, of Lancashire Constabulary’s Tactical Operations Department, said: "This incident has sadly resulted in the death of a man and my thoughts are very much with his friends and family.

"What we do not know at this stage is what caused the cyclist to leave the carriageway and for that reason I am seeking any witnesses who may have seen the incident to make contact with the police or anyone who may have CCTV or dash cam footage."

Detectives are especially keen to identify the occupants of three small hatchback-type vehicles and a possible delivery van that overtook a tractor and trailer carrying hay bales.

The vehicles were reportedly heading towards Horse Park Lane, according to police.

They would also like to talk to the occupants of what is described as a new VW Polo in white that was travelling towards Lancaster near the time of the incident.

Officers say these witnesses may have crucial information that could help them with their investigation.

Anybody with information should contact police by calling 101, quoting log number 1233 of June 25.
